This set of drawings were made on a Newhaven pub crawl. The pub theme came about as Newhaven Open Call will be upstairs at the Ship Hotel on Newhaven High Street. Here are some of the drawings that I’ll be submitting for the show; made on visits to The Hope Inn, The Prince of Wales, The Jolly Boatman and the White Hart. The show will run over the weekend 0f 24th, 25th, 26th August and the weekend of 31st and 1st September. The Preview will be on Friday 24th 4-6pm.
August 2019, A4
A Road Trip from the East Midlands to the North West of England stopping at retail parks, services and town centres including Leicester Fosse Park, Loughborough, Warrington Ikea, Whitebirk near Blackburn and the M6 motorway.
Glynde Forge, September 2018.
Last September I spent an afternoon in Thomas Gontar’s workshop at Glynde Forge. Fire, smoke and steam, the clanging of the hammer on the anvil, tools, patterns and piles of metal make activity at the forge a wonderfully atmospheric subject.
Arlington Race Track, 2018
A cold and rainy November evening spent watching Stock Cars battle it out at Arlington race track in Sussex.
2017, A6
Is there a finer sight in an English market town than three thousand burning torches being carried down the steep slope of Lewes High Street on Bonfire Night?
Traveling by train in the evening can be dull when it’s too dark to watch the world go by outside. So, I’ve been killing time on those evening journeys making self-portraits from my reflection in the carriage window.
East End of London, 2017, A5
I had a walk up Brick Lane on a Sunday afternoon this May. It was a lot more crowded than it used to be. Its well established on the tourist trail. But the flea market is still going; albeit in a smaller area around Sclater Street, which is where most of these drawings were done.
Fairwell to the Grosvenor, Stockwell, South London
I thought I’d mark the sad closing of the Grosvenor Public House in Stockwell by posting a few drawings that I made there.
It’s a great old London pub of the kind that are getting rarer these days, I went there mainly for Club Integral, which was held in the back room and will have its final night there on Friday the 18th July.
Club Integral at the Grosvenor, Stockwell
Possibly the most varied, entertaining and unpredictable regular live music night that London has to offer, I heartily recommend that you get yourselves down to Club Integral.
The nights at the Grosvenor will end on July 18th, but it continues at The Others in Stoke Newington, and heres hoping they’ll find another South London venue before too long.
Many thanks to all concerned.
